Students learned about the different regions or groupings of tastebud receptors on their tongues. We created a number of water-based solutions to create testable flavors (regular coffee, chocolate, salt, sugar in the raw, coffee with vanilla, organic coco, and fun dip). We used individual use cotton swabs to absorb a flavor and then dabbed different areas of our tongues. After each taste the students would record their findings on a tongue sketch to find what section of their tongue had tastebuds for bitter, sweet, sour, and salty. The best moments were bitter based! Irony!
Coleman’s Camp was initiated and developed specifically for Prairie Elementary students in collaboration with Prairie Elementary parents who desired a quality enrichment program that far exceeded the traditional tutoring sessions offered by Mr. Coleman. Coleman’s Camp is structured to be a student-centered, adaptive, and highly engaging environment to deepen student character, intellect, behavior, and peer community.

Coleman's Camp WINTER 2013 - Maze Creation part 2 and Finishing Character Trait Masks
We finished our masks and continued to work in Groups to Design, Build, Test, and Revise Large Scale Unique Versions of this Classic Game. X and Y axis, group planning, and team negotiation were all needed to navigate the pathways.
Coleman's Camp WINTER 2013 - Outside Adventures in Nature
When the weather allows for outside learning we head out to create imaginative sandbox activities that build upon our interests, utilize our creativity, and transform the library and surrounding grounds. We transform plowed snow into miniature ski slopes, reenactment movie themes, investigate empty automatic car washes, and plan jailbreaks!
